The Harambee Simulation Exercise
("Let's work togehter" in Kisauheli) has been developed
by the Munich Centre for Advanced Training in
applied statistics for developing countries of Carl
Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V. in Munich and the Food
Studies Group at Queen Elizabeth House at the
University of Oxford in 1987. It has been
commissioned and financed by the Statistical Office
of the European Communities (Eurostat) in Luxembourg.
An earlier version of the exercise was prepared by
the two organisations listed above together with
INSEE in Paris.
The first version of the Exercise was designed for
use in a series of seminars for the users and
providers of statistics in the field of food and
agricultural statistics which have been held in a
number of sub-Saharan African countries. The second
version has been prepared for continued use in these
seminars, but also so that the Exercise can be made
more widely available to training centres in Africa
and elsewhere. Both English and French versions of
the Exercise have been prepared and a Portuguese
version is under development.
The
HARAMBEE seminar has been exercised in Tanzania,
Rwanda, Mali, Zimbabwe and Malawi |

has been ensured by EUROSTAT, Luxembourg.

version has been prepared for continued use by ACP
countries, especially statistical services,
ministries and training centres. Both English and
French versions of the Exercise are available.
The Simulation Exercise is designed to initiate
discussions and collaboration between users and
producers of statistics in developing countries.
The exercise is focused on the use of statistics
in food sector planning and policy making in
Sub-Saharan African countries.
The final Harambee Exercise has been worked out
on basis of these concepts by: Jane Corbett,
Jean-Luc Dubois, Graham Eele, Peter Greener, Robert
Griffin and Klaus Röder.
The concept of the Exercise was developed by a
steering committee formed by members of the
following institutions:
Statistical Office of the European Communities
(EUROSTAT) - Luxembourg Overseas Development
Administration (ODA) - London Institut National de
la Statistiques et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE) -
