Standard Software for statisticians was limited until the 80s of the previous century to statistical analysis programs. However other emerging standard software was highly suitable for the work of statisticians especially in developing countries where computer resources were and are always a problem.

The use of computers in statistical offices differs very much in Developing Countries from the use especially in Europe. In the USA as my experience in the 1980s in the Bureau of the Census in Washington D.C. showed, at that time a pragmatically use of standard office and analysis software alongside own program applications was noticeable. This might have changed since. In Europe the use of mainframe computers and then middle ware computers have dominated the computer scene for many reasons; an important one was and is data security.

The first courses, like the on in Sierra Leone (one of the sur-place courses shaped in the likeness of the training been given in Munich), employed Word-processing, Database and Graphics software to solve typical survey data processing tasks of a Statistical Office in Africa. The more recent courses aimed at general use of software for statisticians or at training statisticians with limited theoretical background or using some special features of standard software for Statistical use (like Pivot Tables) .

Any user is welcome to share the course contents but is expected to mention its original author or the responsible organization having been in charge of the course

Standard-Software für Statistiker war bis die Achtzigerjahre des vorhergehenden Jahrhunderts auf Programme der statistischen Analyse begrenzt. Jedoch war andere neu den Markt erobernde Standard-Software für die Arbeit der Statistiker besonders in Entwicklungsländern in hohem Grade verwendbar, in denen Computer Zugang und Vorhandensein immer ein Problem waren und sind.

Die Nutzung von Computern in den statistischen Ämtern unterscheidet sich in Entwicklungsländern von der Computer-Nutzung besonders in Europa deutlich.

In den USA aus meiner Erfahrung in den achtziger Jahren im Bureau of the Census in Washington DC, das, zu dieser Zeit pragmatischen Gebrauch von Standardbüro- und Analysen-Software neben eigenen Programmanwendungen machte. Dieses könnte sich seit dem geändert haben. In Europa hat der Gebrauch der Zentralrechner und dann Middle- Ware Computer die Computerszene aus vielen Gründen beherrscht; ein wichtiger Grund war und ist Datensicherheit.

Die ersten Kurse, wie der in Sierra Leone (einer der Sur-place Kurse nach Art des Trainings in München), setzten Textverarbeitung-, Datenbank- und Grafik-Software ein, um datenverarbeitende Aufgaben einer typischen Aufgabe eines statistischen Amtes in Afrika zu lösen. Die neueren Kurse richten sich an den allgemeinen Gebrauch von Software für Statistiker oder an das Training für Statistiker mit begrenztem theoretischem Hintergrund oder der Anwendung einiger spezieller Funktionen der Standard-Software für statistischen Gebrauch (wie Pivot-Tabellen in EXCEL).
